Ambassador Lunch with the Ambassador of Bulgaria to Belgium,
H.E. Mrs. Maya Dobreva
The Bulgarian economy, which was hit hard by the crisis in 2009 (-5%), has begun to show slight signs of growth since 2011. According to prognoses from the IMF, growth in 2016 and 2017 will reach 3% and 2,8% respectively. Different international organisations, which recently included the World Bank, have adjusted the growth forecasts upwards. According to a survey by the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce, entrepreneurs continue to be moderately optimistic about economic growth in 2017. Bulgaria’s position in certain international economic rankings has also been improving.
The fact that the country is once again facing political uncertainty, after two years of stability, is what weakens the Bulgarian economy. Bulgaria is the poorest EU Member State with low purchasing power. Some observers think that purchasing power is going to increase in the coming years which will boost individual consumption as well as growth.
The bulk of trade in goods in Bulgaria consists of equipment, transport and foodstuffs. The most important trading partners are Germany, Italy, Turkey and Romania. The balance of trade is negative because the country is dependent on Russia for its energy supply. Bulgaria imports more than 95% of its gas from Russia.
In order to find out what is possible, and where the best opportunities lie, the Brussels Diplomatic Academy of the VUB, Voka Metropolitan and Voka Vlaams-Brabant are organising an Ambassador Lunch.
The Bulgarian Ambassador to Belgium, H.E. Maya Dobreva, will tell you everything you need to know about the Bulgarian market and the commercial and investment opportunities it offers your company.
